Sunita William is a famous astronaut who has spent a long time in space. She has been on important missions, setting records and making great contributions to space exploration. Her journeys have helped in scientific research and inspired people all over the world. She has participated in multiple spaceflights, and her latest mission took place in 2024. Let’s took a look at her space travel history and her scheduled return to Earth.
NASA astronaut Sunita Williams and her crewmate Butch Wilmore went to space on 5 June 2024. They traveled in Boeing’s Starliner spacecraft, which was on its first crewed test flight. Their missions was originally planned for only eight days, during which they had to check the performance of the Starliner before NASA could approve it for future missions.
On 6 June 2024, the spacecraft successfully docked at the International Space Station (ISS). However, NASA noticed problems with the thrusters and helium leaks. These issues created safety concerns and NASA decided to delay the astronauts’ return until the spacecraft could be fixed.
As time passed, NASA could not find a safe way for them to return. Their stay was extended indefinitely from 12 June 2024. During July and August 2024, Williams and Wilmore became part of the ISS crew. They helped with maintenance, scientific experiments and adjusted to a longer stay in space.
Sunita Williams faced physical changes due to the extended stay, such as muscle loss and weaker bones. However, she stayed positive and sent video messages to the public, keeping everyone updated.
In September 2024, Williams was given a leadership role as the commander of the ISS. She managed daily activities, oversaw crew schedules, and helped with critical experiments. She also took care of maintenance work, such as fixing a broken toilet, cleaning air vents and checking plant experiments.
After more than eight months in space, NASA has finally scheduled Sunita Williams’s return. She will come back to Earth with Butch Wilmore abroad a SpaceX Crew Dragon capsule. Their return is planned as part of the Crew-10 mission, which will launch on 12 March 2025.
Their unexpected long stay has been a challenging but historic moment in space travel. Now, NASA is ensuring a safe return for the astronauts after their extended journey on the ISS.
