Did you know India now has a convention centre that can host thousands of people under one roof? In recent years, the country has been building modern venues to organise big global meetings and exhibitions. These places are not only useful for events but also show India’s growing importance on the world stage.
Large exhibition grounds have always been a part of big cities. For decades, traders, artists, and companies gathered at huge fairgrounds to display their products. Over time, these spaces needed better technology, bigger halls, and smarter designs.
Sometimes old buildings are replaced to create new facilities. This often brings both excitement and debate — some people welcome modern development while others wish to protect historic structures. Such projects usually become an important part of urban transformation.
Today, international summits, book fairs, trade shows, and cultural events need advanced infrastructure. Countries compete to build world-class venues that can handle large crowds comfortably and safely.
One such modern complex has recently become a major landmark in India and has already hosted global leaders and massive exhibitions.
Bharat Mandapam is located inside the famous exhibition complex Pragati Maidan in New Delhi, India. It stands in central Delhi near Mathura Road and close to the historic Purana Qila area.
The venue is easily reachable through the Supreme Court Metro Station and is only a few kilometres away from Hazrat Nizamuddin Railway Station, making it convenient for visitors coming from across the country and abroad.
Bharat Mandapam is one of India’s largest convention and exhibition centres. The complex covers about 390,000 square metres of built-up area.
Main features include:
The centre was officially opened in 2023 and quickly became a symbol of modern infrastructure in India.
Before this complex existed, the land had a famous building called the Hall of Nations designed by architect Raj Rewal.
The old structure was part of Pragati Maidan, inaugurated in 1972 by Indira Gandhi during a major trade fair celebrating 25 years of Indian independence.
It was once considered the world’s largest concrete space-frame building and admired internationally. However, it was demolished in 2017 during redevelopment, which led to strong protests from architects and heritage lovers.
After 2014, the Government of India planned a world-class exhibition and convention facility. The project was developed by India Trade Promotion Organisation and constructed by National Buildings Construction Corporation.
The new complex was designed by international architectural firms and built at a cost of over ₹2,600 crore. The aim was to create a venue capable of hosting global events and improving Delhi’s infrastructure.
The biggest highlight of the venue came in September 2023 when India hosted the G20 New Delhi Summit here.
World leaders from many countries gathered at Bharat Mandapam for meetings and discussions, making the venue globally recognised overnight.
Even before redevelopment, Pragati Maidan was famous for exhibitions, and the tradition continues today. Major events include:
The modern halls now allow bigger and more advanced events than before.
