The oldest known water in the world was discovered deep inside the Kidd Creek Mine, located in Timmins. This mine is one of the deepest and oldest in Canada.
Scientists found this ancient groundwater more than 3 kilometers below the Earth’s surface. The water has been trapped in rocks for up to 2.6 billion years, making it older than most life forms on Earth.
The discovery was made by a team of scientists from the University of Toronto, led by geologist Barbara Sherwood Lollar.
They used deep drilling methods and explored small cracks in ancient rocks where water was naturally flowing. These rocks belong to a very old period known as the Archean Eon.
Between 2009 and 2013, the team collected water samples that were already over a billion years old. Later studies confirmed that some samples were even older—reaching up to 2.6 billion years.

To find out how old the water is, scientists studied special gases trapped inside it. These gases include helium, neon, argon, krypton, and xenon.
Over time, these gases build up in a predictable way. By measuring them using advanced tools like mass spectrometry, scientists can estimate how long the water has been isolated.
This method showed that the water has remained underground for 1.5 to 2.6 billion years.
