Rivers and freshwater areas are home to many powerful and unique animals. Some of them spend most of their day inside water to stay cool and safe. These animals have strong bodies, thick skin, and special features that help them live both in water and on land. One such animal is closely connected with rivers and has been given a famous name because of this habit.
The hippopotamus, often called hippo, is the animal known as the River Horse. Its scientific name is Hippopotamus amphibius. The word “hippopotamus” comes from ancient Greek. In Greek, “hippos” means horse and “potamos” means river, so the name literally means horse of the river.
Hippos are mainly found in Africa. They live in rivers, lakes, swamps, and wetlands. During the daytime, they stay in water to keep their bodies cool. At night, they come out on land to eat grass. Water is very important for their survival.
Hippos are among the largest land animals in the world. An adult hippo can weigh more than 3,000 kilograms. They have a big round body, short legs, a wide mouth, and long sharp teeth called tusks. Their skin looks smooth but is very sensitive to the sun.
Hippos are herbivores, which means they eat plants. Their main food is grass. Every night, a hippo can eat 30–40 kilograms of grass. Even though they are very big and strong, they do not eat meat.
Hippos spend most of the day in water. They do not swim like fish. Instead, they walk or push themselves along the riverbed. They can hold their breath for several minutes and come up to breathe without fully waking up. On land, they can run surprisingly fast for short distances.
The hippopotamus is called the River Horse because of its ancient Greek name and its strong connection with rivers. Early people saw it living in water like a river animal and noticed its size and strength, which reminded them of a horse. Even though the name suggests a horse, hippos are not related to horses. In fact, they are more closely related to whales and dolphins.
