Air travel has changed the way the world communicates. Today, we can send letters and parcels across countries in just a few hours. But many years ago, people depended only on ships, trains, and road transport, which took a long time. The idea of using airplanes to deliver mail was a new and exciting step that opened the door to faster global communication.
The world’s first official airmail service began in India. It happened on 18 February 1911 during British rule. A French pilot named Henri Pequet flew a small Humber biplane from Allahabad (now Prayagraj) to Naini. He carried around 6,500 letters and postcards. The flight lasted only a few minutes, but it became a big moment in world history.
This special flight took place during the Kumbh Mela fair. The aim was to raise money for charity. All letters had a special postal stamp called “First Aerial Post”. Though the distance was short, the event proved that airplanes could safely carry mail.
