City of Palaces

Mysuru, also known as Mysore, is a well-known district in Karnataka, India. Popularly called the “City of Palaces,” it is admired for its grand palaces, cultural history, and royal heritage. With its beautiful architecture, ancient temples, and natural scenery, Mysuru welcomes visitors from across the globe and remains one of India’s most loved travel destinations.

Why Mysuru is called the City of Palaces?

Mysuru earned its title due to the presence of several grand palaces that reflect the city’s royal past. These palaces were built during the reign of the Wodeyar Dynasty and showcase a blend of architectural style, including Hindu, Muslim, Rajput and Gothic designs.

Famous Palaces in Mysuru

  • Amba Vilas Palace: The Mysore Palace, also called Amba Vilas, is the most famous palace in the city. It served as the residence of the Wodeyar rulers and is an architectural marvel. The palace is a mix of styles and is beautifully illuminated during special events.
  • Jagmohan Palace: Built in 1861, Jagmohan Palace is now an art gallery and function hall. It houses a collection of paintings, artifacts and historical treasures.
  • Rajendra Vilas: Completed in 1939, Rajendra Vilas Palace is located on Chamundi Hills. Though it is currently in ruins, it is still a reminder of the city’s royal heritage.

Mysuru’s Scenic Location

Mysuru is located at the foothills of the Chamundi Hills, in the southern part of the Deccan Plateau. The city is about 140 kilometers from Bangalore, the capital of Karnataka. Its scenic beauty, along with its historical significance, makes it a must-visit destination.

A Hub of Culture and Tourism

Mysuru is not just about palaces. It is also known for its vibrant culture, famous festivals like Dasara, and traditional crafts such as Mysore silk and sandalwood products. The city is a treasure trove of history and art, offering something for everyone.
