As of 2023, the state has 55 district councils (jila panchayats), 376 tehsils (administrative areas), 313 block councils (janpad panchayats), and 23,043 village councils (gram panchayats). The state also has several municipalities, including 18 city corporations (Nagar Nigams), 100 town councils (Nagar Palikas), and 264 small town councils (Nagar Panchayats).
In Madhya Pradesh, the largest district by area is Chhindwara, which covers 11,815 square kilometers. On the other hand, the smallest district is Niwari, with an area of 1,170 square kilometers.
