She broke records, won medals and inspired many young athletes. Her achievements earned her a special nickname, which is now known by every sports fan in the country. Who is Known as the Payyoli Express?

P.T. Usha, fondly called the “Payyoli Express,” is one of India’s greatest athletes. She was born on June 27, 1964, in Koothali, a village in Kerala. Known for her remarkable speed and talent, she earned the title “Queen of Indian Track and Field” after winning many national and international medals.

Early Life and Training

Usha grew up in Payyoli, Kerala, where she developed a love for running. In 1976, she joined a sports training center in Kannur. Indian athletes coach O. M. Nambiar noticed her talent in 1977 and started training her. Soon, she began winning medals in school and state-level competitions.

Achievements in Sports

Usha participated in her first international competition in 1980 in Pakistan, where she won four gold medals. She set many national records in 100m, 200m and 400m races. She won multiple medals at the 1982 Asian Games and the 1983 Asian Championships.

1984 Los Angeles Olympics

Usha became a national hero after her performance at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics. She completed in the 400m hurdles and came very close to winning a bronze medal. She finished in fourth place, missing the medal by just 1/100th of a second.

More International Success

In 1985, Usha won five gold medals and one bronze at the Asian Championships in Jakarta. In the 1986 Asian Games in Seoul, she won four gold medals and one silver. From 1983 to 1989, she won 13 gold medals in Asian Track and Field events.

Retirement and Later Career

Usha retired from professional sports in 2000. After retirement, she focused on training young athletes in India. In 2022, she was nominated as a Member of Parliament in the Rajya Sabha. In December 2022, she became the President of the Indian Olympic Association.
