India is a land of many natural wonders, from hot deserts to snowy mountains. In the northeastern region, there is a beautiful place known for its cool climate, green hills, and misty views. Clouds often float low in the sky and touch the land, creating a dreamy atmosphere. Because of frequent rain and fog, this place feels fresh, calm, and magical throughout the year.
Meghalaya is the place that proudly carries the title “Land of Clouds.” The name comes from two Sanskrit words — Megh meaning clouds and Alaya meaning home. Together, Meghalaya means “Abode of Clouds.”
This name perfectly describes the state, as clouds are seen floating low over hills, forests, roads, and even villages for most of the year.
Meghalaya is located in Northeast India. It shares its northern and eastern borders with Assam and its southern border with Bangladesh. The state lies on a high plateau and is part of the famous Seven Sister States of India. Its capital city, Shillong, is often called the “Scotland of the East” because of its pleasant weather and rolling hills.
Meghalaya remains cloudy because of its unique geography and climate. Warm, moist winds from the Bay of Bengal travel towards the land during the monsoon season. When these winds reach the hills of Meghalaya, they are forced to rise.
As the air rises, it cools down quickly. Cool air cannot hold much moisture, so the water vapour turns into clouds and rain. This natural process keeps the sky cloudy and the land misty.
Two places in Meghalaya are famous worldwide for receiving extremely heavy rainfall:
These places receive rain almost throughout the year, which adds to the thick cloud cover and lush greenery of the region.
The Khasi, Garo, and Jaintia Hills play a major role in trapping clouds. Their shape acts like a natural wall that stops moisture-filled winds and pushes them upward. This causes orographic rainfall, a scientific term used when mountains force air to rise and form rain clouds.
Meghalaya has dense forests that release moisture into the air through a natural process called transpiration. Trees give out water vapour, which mixes with the already humid air and forms low-level clouds and fog. This is why clouds often appear close to the ground, creating a magical “cloud forest” environment.
Meghalaya is not just about clouds and rain. It is also known for many unique natural wonders:
