India is known for its beautiful traditions, colourful festivals, and ancient art forms that have been passed down through generations. Many of these cultural practices are so special that UNESCO includes them in its Intangible Cultural Heritage list. This list helps protect and celebrate traditions that reflect India’s identity, creativity, and history. Each element shows how rich and diverse India’s living culture truly is.
Intangible cultural heritage refers to living traditions such as festivals, dances, rituals, oral stories, music, crafts, and performance arts. These traditions are kept alive by communities and represent their identity, history, and shared values.
UNESCO’s Intergovernmental Committee evaluates cultural elements from different countries. They check how unique, meaningful, and community-based the tradition is. In India, the Ministry of Culture works to preserve and promote these traditions so they can be recognised globally and safeguarded for the future.
India was added to the list for the first time in 2008. That year, three traditions—Kutiyattam, Vedic Chanting and Ramlila—were included. Since then, more elements have been added, showing India’s growing cultural importance.
India’s cultural traditions are full of music, festivals, performances and rituals that people have preserved for generations. UNESCO’s Representative List honours these living traditions, showing the world the richness and diversity of India’s heritage.
