Sun Pharmaceutical Industries Limited, commonly known as Sun Pharma, is the largest pharmaceutical company in India. Headquartered in Mumbai, it supplies medicines to more than 100 countries and plays a major role in the global healthcare industry. The company is especially known for its strong presence in both generic and specialty medicines.
Sun Pharma started its journey in 1983 when Dilip Shanghvi began the company with just a few psychiatry medicines and a very small team. Over time, the company expanded rapidly by improving its product range and entering new markets.
A major turning point came in 2014 when Sun Pharma acquired Ranbaxy Laboratories. This deal made Sun Pharma one of the largest specialty generic pharmaceutical companies in the world.
Sun Pharma earns a large part of its income from international markets. Around 70% of its revenue comes from outside India. The United States and India are its biggest markets, contributing more than half of the company’s total earnings.
The company has manufacturing units in many regions, including India, the US, Europe, Asia, Africa, and Australia. This wide network helps Sun Pharma supply medicines across the globe efficiently.
Sun Pharma produces medicines for many different health problems. These include treatments for heart diseases, diabetes, infections, mental health issues, skin conditions and cancer.
The company also manufacture Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (APIs), which are the key components used to make medicines. Some of its well-known drug ingredients include baricitinib, brivaracetam, and dapagliflozin.
