Rishikesh has a long and spiritual history. In the 8th century. Adi Shankaracharya reinstalled a statue of Lord Vishnu made from a stone called Shaligram here. Since then, the place has been a center for meditation and prayers. Pilgrims often rest here before going to the higher peaks of the Himalayas.
