Every year, people all over the world celebrate a special festival filled with joy, lights, and decorations. Homes and streets shine with colorful ornaments, and families gather to share happiness and gifts. One of the most exciting parts of this celebration is preparing and decorating something that brings everyone together, creating a warm and festive atmosphere full of love, cheer, and holiday spirit.
The tree most known as the Christmas tree is the Norway Spruce. Its scientific name is Picea abies. This tree comes from Europe, especially countries like Norway, Sweden, and Germany. The tradition of bringing a decorated tree indoors started in Germany in the 16th century, and the Norway Spruce was perfect because it was widely available and had a beautiful shape.
While Norway Spruce is the original, many other trees are also used today:
A Christmas tree is sometimes called a Yule tree or simply a fir tree. In medieval Germany, it was also called the Paradise Tree, used in plays to show the story of Adam and Eve. Interestingly, in the oil and gas industry, a “Christmas tree” refers to a set of valves and pipes on a wellhead, completely different from the holiday tree!
The first decorated tree is believed to have appeared in Europe many centuries ago. In Riga, Latvia, in 1510, merchants decorated a tree with flowers and danced around it before burning it. Earlier, in Germany, people used fir trees decorated with apples in religious plays called Paradise Plays.
Some legends say that the Brotherhood of the Blackheads, a group of merchants in Estonia, displayed the first Christmas tree in Tallinn in 1441. Today, Tallinn still puts up a Christmas tree in the main square every year, continuing the old tradition.
