General Knowledge plays a crucial role in shaping our understanding of the world around us. It helps individuals stay informed about various subjects such as history, science, politics and culture. Over time, many educators and thinkers have emphasized the importance of GK in education. One individual, in particular, has become widely recognized for his significant contribution to promoting General Knowledge and its value in personal growth and development.
Bhikaiji Rustom Cama was a freedom fighter, social reformer and advocate for education. She is called the “Father of GK” because of her huge contributions to spreading knowledge and awareness. Her work through writings and speeches helped people understand social, political and historical issues better.
Bhikaiji Cama was born on September 24, 1861, in Mumbai, India, into a wealthy Parsi family. Her parents supported her education, which was rare for women at that time. She grew up with a passion for knowledge and developed an interest in politics and social issues.
Bhikaiji Rustom Cama contributed to spreading GK through various means:
One of Bhikaiji’s most significant contributions was designing and unfurling the Indian flag at an international conference in 1907 in Germany. The flag featured the slogan “Vande Mataram” and became a symbol of India’s struggle for independence. This act made her an iconic figure in the freedom movement.
Bhikaiji Cama passed away on August 13, 1936, but her legacy continues. In recognition of her contributions, the Indian government issued a commemorative stamp in her honor on India’s 11th Republic Day in 1962. Additionally, the Indian Coast Guard named a ship, ICGS Bhikaiji Cama, after her in 1997.
