Pieter Elbers was born on 11 May 1970 in Schiedam, South Holland, Netherlands. From a young age, he was interested in travel and global business. With more than 30 years of experience in aviation, he is widely recognized for his strong decision-making skills and ability to handle complex situations.
Elbers completed his schooling at De Singel Primo Schiedam. He then earned a bachelor’s degree in logistics management from Fontys University of Applied Sciences in Venlo.
To further enhance his skills, he pursued an MBA from the Open University of the Netherlands. He also took part in international study programmes in New York and Beijing, which helped him develop a broad, global perspective.
Pieter Elbers began his professional journey in 1992 as an aircraft loading supervisor at Schiphol Airport. He later joined KLM and worked in several important roles across countries like Japan, Greece, and Italy.
He became Senior Vice President of Network & Alliances, where he helped KLM connect with the SkyTeam Alliance.
In 2011, he joined KLM’s Board of Managing Directors as COO, and in 2014, he became the President and CEO of KLM. He served in this position until early 2022 while also being part of the Air France-KLM Group leadership.
After leaving KLM, Elbers was appointed as the CEO of IndiGo and officially took charge on 6 September 2022.
