World Lung Day 2026: Theme, Date, History and Key Facts
World Lung Day is observed every year on September 25th to spread awareness concerning the lungs and respiratory diseases. The campaign of 2026 is spearheaded by the Forum of International Respiratory Societies (FIRS) and other partner organizations. The official theme for the year 2026 is “A Lifetime of Lung Health” which calls for a call of duty to support healthy lungs through out our lives, beginning from their growth and development in childhood up to when we become adults and old people.
World Lung Day is a worldwide respiratory-health awareness campaign that helps bring awareness regarding the diseases, prevention, research and availability of respiratory care. FIRS promotes this event annually to promote the adoption of measures for promoting the health of the lungs among the government, health professionals, organizations and communities.
Some of the factors contributing to poor respiratory health include air pollution, smoking, and disparities in availability of healthcare. FIRS refers to September 25 as an occasion to promote prevention, research and availability of respiratory care worldwide.
The 2026 theme is “A Lifetime of Lung Health.” The event has been organised by FIRS on the following four related themes,
The theme has used a life-course approach to lung health because of its dependence on many factors from early life until old age.
1. Lung Development
This campaign emphasizes the significance of lung development, especially during the early years. Respiratory health issues during childhood can have an impact on one’s health in future.
2. Lung Growth
Lung growth constitutes another area of focus. Therefore, the 2026 campaign expands its scope from the early development to the growth of lungs during childhood.
3. Keeping Lungs Healthy
This campaign also calls for efforts towards the maintenance of lung health among adults. Prevention, awareness, and proper care of the respiratory system are key aspects of healthy lungs.
4. Healthy Lungs for Life
The last area of focus combines the concept of life course approach. It implies that lung health should be promoted throughout life and not when there are respiratory issues.
The lungs are directly involved in the process of oxygen intake and expulsion of carbon dioxide from the body. According to the WHO, lung health is a key determinant of overall wellbeing, and exposure to risk factors and infections in early childhood affects lung development.
Among lung diseases that are the major causes of death and disability in the world, WHO highlights asthma, COPD, lung cancer, pneumonia, and tuberculosis. Chronic respiratory diseases may affect the functioning of the lungs, and infections may result in both acute and chronic lung damage.
The larger Healthy Lungs for Life campaign by FIRS and the European Lung Foundation covers topics such as physical activity, clean air, quitting smoking, vaccines, healthy eating and climate action.
In 2026, their grant program will be funding community efforts on lung health, which include work on air pollution and health equity.
FIRS has drawn attention to the importance of increasing the availability of inhaled medications for individuals with chronic respiratory conditions such as asthma and COPD.
