Every year on 5 November, the world observes World Tsunami Awareness Day, a day dedicated to raising awareness about the risk of tsunamis and the importance of readiness, safety planning and early‑warning systems. Established by the United Nations General Assembly in December 2015, this day encourages nations, communities and individuals to turn awareness into action.
The theme for 2025 focuses on “Be Tsunami Ready: Invest in Tsunami Preparedness”, highlighting the need for proactive investment in infrastructure, early‑warning systems, community training and resilient coastal planning. With sea‑level rise and increasing coastal population exposure, the imperative to be prepared has never been stronger.
The date traces its inspiration to the Japanese tale of Inamura‑no‑hi (the Burning of the Rice Sheaves), where a farmer anticipated an incoming tsunami and set fire to his rice sheaves to warn the villagers and guide them to safety. In recognition of this story of early action, the UN chose 5 November as a forward‑looking day of preparedness.
