World's Top 10 Countries with the Best Environment
In 2022, at COP 15 in Montreal, over 190 countries made what has been called “the biggest conservation commitment the world has ever seen.” The Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework called for the effective protection and management of 30% of the world’s terrestrial, inland water, coastal, and marine areas by the year 2030, commonly known as the 30×30 target.
As renowned environmentalist Gaylord Nelson once said, “The ultimate test of man’s conscience may be his willingness to sacrifice something today for future generations whose words of thanks will not be heard.” This sentiment captures the essence of the 30×30 target: a global effort to protect 30% of the planet by 2030.
While progress has been made, the recently released 2024 Environmental Performance Index (EPI) highlights that the highest overall EPI scores are concentrated in Europe. However, emissions in major economies such as the U.S. (ranked 34th) are falling too slowly, while emissions in China, Russia, and India (ranked 176th) are still rising due to increased reliance on coal, the dirtiest fossil fuel.
The Environmental Performance Index (EPI) ranks countries based on 58 indicators across 11 issue categories, including climate change mitigation, air pollution, waste management, sustainability of fisheries and agriculture, deforestation, and biodiversity protection. Here are the top 10 countries with the best and cleanest environments in 2024:
Rank | Country | Rank Score | Ecosystem Vitality Score | 10-Year Trend |

Estonia ranks first in 2024 due to its commitment to renewable energy, conservation efforts, and low carbon emissions. With over 50% forest coverage, the country leads in sustainable forest management and biodiversity protection.
Luxembourg boasts the highest air quality and waste management efficiency in the world. It has implemented strict environmental regulations and continues to invest in green energy and eco-friendly urban planning.
Germany excels in sustainable agriculture, renewable energy, and emissions reduction. The country is a pioneer in the Energiewende (energy transition), moving towards complete reliance on renewable energy sources.
Finland is a global leader in forest conservation and carbon neutrality. With an ambitious goal to become carbon-neutral by 2035, Finland invests heavily in sustainable industries and green technologies.
The UK has made significant progress in reducing carbon emissions and investing in offshore wind energy. Its government policies support a transition towards a net-zero economy by 2050.
Sweden is recognized for its strong environmental policies and efforts in recycling and waste management. It has one of the lowest carbon footprints per capita in Europe.
Norway ranks high due to its hydropower-based energy system, which provides nearly 98% of its electricity from renewable sources. It also leads in electric vehicle adoption.
Austria is known for its strict environmental laws, pristine landscapes, and water quality. However, it faces challenges in balancing urban development with environmental sustainability.
Switzerland has exceptional air and water quality, and its commitment to sustainability is reflected in its public transport system and waste recycling programs.
Denmark is a global leader in wind energy and climate adaptation strategies. It has ambitious goals to become completely fossil fuel-free by 2050.
