Yogi Government Renames Jalalabad Town as Parashurampuri
The Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, Yogi Adityanath, has led the Cabinet in the decision to change the name of Jalalabad, a town in the district of Shahjahanpur. The broad-based Cabinet approval for the renaming of Jalalabad to Parashurampuri is based on the lack of objections from the Central Government. The state government believes that this action emphasizes the historical and religious connections of the town with the Hindu God.
The cabinet of Uttar Pradesh on July 6th, 2026, in a meeting presided over by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, approved the proposal to rename the town of Jalalabad as Parashurampuri.
Uttar Pradesh Finance Minister Suresh Kumar Khanna stated that the Central Government had given a nod to the proposal thus paving way for the Cabinet’s decision.
Once approved by the Cabinet, the concerned departments will carry out all necessary administrative and legal procedures required to put the new name in records.
According to the UP government, the change of name was in response to the demand of local residents who expressed the need for changing the name keeping in view the town’s historical and religious significance.
The UP government said that,
Jalalabad is situated in the Shahjahanpur district in the state of Uttar Pradesh.
The town was named Jalalabad during the Mughal era after the well-known person Jalal-ud-din Muhammad Akbar.
It has now been decided by the state government that the name which appears to be more appropriate with the traditional identity of the town would be revived.
Lord Parashuram is considered to be the sixth incarnation of Lord Vishnu.
