The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has announced the appointment of Mio Oka as its new Country Director for India, succeeding Takeo Konishi. Ms. Oka brings nearly three decades of professional experience, including over 18 years with ADB, to her new role. Her appointment marks a significant milestone in ADB’s continued partnership with India in supporting its development goals and economic growth.
As the new Country Director, Ms. Oka will be responsible for steering ADB’s operations in India and fostering relations with the government and other development partners. She will lead the implementation of ADB’s country partnership strategy for India, designed to catalyze robust, climate-resilient, and inclusive private sector-led growth. This strategy aims to accelerate structural transformation, promote climate-resilient green growth, and enhance social and economic inclusiveness in India.
Ms. Oka, a Japanese national, has a wealth of experience in development finance and project management. She has served in various capacities at ADB since 2005, including as an advisor to the President and as a director in the agriculture and natural resources sector. Prior to joining ADB, she worked with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan, the Japan Bank for International Cooperation, and the Japan International Cooperation Agency Bangladesh Office. Ms. Oka holds a master’s degree in social policy and planning in developing countries from the London School of Economics and a bachelor’s degree in development studies and politics from the University of London.
India is one of ADB’s largest shareholders and borrowers, receiving significant financial support from the bank since 2010. In 2023 alone, ADB committed $2.59 billion in sovereign lending to India, along with technical assistance and grants. The current Indian sovereign portfolio comprises 73 projects worth a total of $15.7 billion. ADB remains committed to achieving a prosperous, inclusive, resilient, and sustainable Asia and the Pacific, with a focus on eradicating extreme poverty.
Established in 1966, ADB is owned by 68 members and is committed to achieving sustainable development in Asia and the Pacific region.
