Ahmedabad to Host 11th Asian Aquatics Championship 2025

The city of Ahmedabad is set to host the 11th Asian Aquatics Championship from September 28 to October 11, 2025, marking the first time India is organizing this prestigious continental event. The venue, Veer Savarkar Sports Complex in Narangpura, was recently inaugurated and now joins the ranks of international-standard sports infrastructure in India. The championship is being held under the aegis of Asia Aquatics, with the Swimming Federation of India overseeing operations and support from the Sports Authority of Gujarat.

A Major Event in the Asian Sporting Calendar

The championship will feature competitions in four aquatic disciplines,

  • Swimming
  • Diving
  • Artistic Swimming
  • Water Polo
  • More than 900 athletes from 29 Asian countries are expected to participate, making this one of the largest aquatic sporting events ever held in India.

Crucially, the event also serves as a qualifier for the 2026 Asian Games, giving Indian athletes a rare opportunity to compete at home under international standards.

Boost to India’s Olympic and Commonwealth Aspirations

Hosting the championship is seen as a strategic step in India’s long-term goal to,

  • Host the 2030 Commonwealth Games
  • Bid for the 2036 Olympic Games
  • By demonstrating organizational capacity, world-class infrastructure, and sporting culture, Gujarat—especially Ahmedabad—is positioning itself as a future global sports destination.

The event also builds on India’s ongoing campaign to elevate its international sports profile following recent successes in cricket, hockey, and athletics.

Benefits for Indian Sports and Youth

This championship brings multiple benefits for Indian sports,

  • Exposure for Indian athletes to high-level competition
  • Motivation for grassroots talent in aquatic sports
  • Promotion of swimming and diving as professional pathways
  • Legacy infrastructure for future events and training

The Veer Savarkar Sports Complex, now under the global spotlight, is expected to become a hub for aquatic training and talent development.
