Poorvi Akash exercise in Northeast: Key Points

  • The Indian Air Force would deploy significant combat assets such fighter jets like the Rafale and Su-30 as well as helicopters, transport aircraft, and other aircraft in the following days for the huge Command-level exercise.
  • The drone squadrons that were recently relocated to the Northeast will also participate in the drill.
  • The Indian Air Force is better able to monitor any hostile activities along the Sikkim and Siliguri region thanks to the engagement of the drone squadrons.

Air Force massive Air Exercise Pralay: About

  • Following the clash between Indian and Chinese troops along the LAC in the Tawang sector of Arunachal Pradesh in December of last year, the two-day air exercise known as Pralay was held.
  • The Northeast is also seeing the deployment of an S-400 air defence squadron, which can engage any hostile aircraft or missile from a distance of up to 400 km, in addition to the movement of drone squadrons there.
  • In addition to exercise Pralay, another significant Command-level exercise called Poorvi Akash will take place in the Northeast the first week of February.
  • Due to the Covid-19-induced epidemic, the exercise—which will once more involve the Eastern Air Command—is being undertaken after a two-year hiatus.
  • One of the five commands of the Indian Air Force, the Eastern Air Command has its headquarters in Shillong and is in charge of all air operations in the eastern sector.

The 6300 km international border with China, Nepal, Bhutan, Myanmar, and Bangladesh is part of the command’s domain of control.
