Australian wicketkeeper-batter Matthew Wade Retires from Red-Ball Cricket

Australian wicketkeeper-batter Matthew Wade has announced his decision to retire from red-ball cricket (first-class cricket).

Final Red-Ball Match

  • Wade’s final red-ball match will be the upcoming Sheffield Shield final between Tasmania and Western Australia, starting on March 21, 2024.
  • The Sheffield Shield final will mark the end of Wade’s red-ball career that started in 2012.

Availability for White-Ball Cricket

  • Despite retiring from red-ball cricket, Wade will remain available for selection in white-ball formats (ODIs and T20Is).
  • After the Sheffield Shield final, Wade will join the Gujarat Titans for the IPL 2024.
  • However, he will miss the first couple of IPL matches due to the clash with the Shield final schedule.

Test Career Stats

  • Wade has played 36 Tests for Australia.
  • He has scored 1613 runs with four centuries at an average of 29.87.
  • His last Test appearance was against India at Brisbane in 2021, after which he lost his place to Alex Carrey.

Limited-Overs Finisher

  • In recent years, Wade has developed himself as a finisher in the T20 format.
  • He played a significant role in Australia’s triumphant run in the T20 World Cup 2021.
  • Wade’s unbeaten 41 off just 17 balls against Pakistan in the semifinal at Dubai remains one of his most memorable knocks.

Matthew Wade’s retirement from red-ball cricket marks the end of an era for the Australian wicketkeeper-batter. However, he will continue to contribute to Australia’s white-ball teams and participate in various T20 leagues around the world, including the IPL.
