BRO Celebrates its Foundation on May 7th

The Border Roads Organisation (BRO), a vital arm of India’s defence and strategic infrastructure framework, celebrated its 64th Foundation Day on May 7, 2025. Operating under the Ministry of Defence, BRO has been instrumental in enhancing road connectivity in India’s most remote and challenging border regions, playing a key role in both defence preparedness and regional development.

On May 7, 2025, the BRO completed 64 years of service since its formation in 1960. The organisation continues to make headlines for record-setting infrastructure feats, such as the world’s highest motorable road at Umling La, Ladakh, and the construction of strategic tunnels, bridges, and airfields. With increasing border challenges and geopolitical concerns, BRO’s role has never been more crucial.

  • Formed on 7 May 1960 under the Ministry of Defence.
  • Coordinates through the Border Roads Development Board (BRDB).
  • Initially funded by the Ministry of Road Transport, fully transferred to Ministry of Defence in 2015.
  • Motto: “Shramena Sarvam Sadhyam” (Everything is achievable through hard work).

Organisational Structure

  • Comprises Border Roads Wing and General Reserve Engineer Force (GREF).
  • Staffed by officers from BRES, Indian Army Corps of Engineers, and Pioneer Corps.
  • Includes 18 projects with multiple task forces, RCCs, BCCs, DMCs, and Platoons.
  • Has presence in India, Bhutan, Afghanistan, Myanmar, Sri Lanka, and Tajikistan.

  • Constructed 55,000+ km of roads, 450+ bridges, and 19 airfields by 2022.
  • Built Atal Tunnel, Col Chewang Rinchen Setu, and Atal Setu.
  • Holds Guinness World Record for highest motorable road at Umling La (19,024 ft).
  • First woman BRO officer on Indo-China border: Vaishali S. Hiwase.
  • Engaged in snow clearance and maintenance in extreme terrains.
