Why in News?

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) announced that Class 10 students will have the option to appear for board exams twice a year starting from the 2026-27 academic session. This student-centric reform aligns with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, aiming to reduce exam stress and provide flexibility.

Objective and Aim

  • To reduce pressure on students by removing the “one-chance” high-stakes model.
  • To provide flexibility for students to improve scores in up to three academic subjects.
  • To implement a student-friendly assessment model in line with NEP 2020.

Key Features

  • First Exam (Mandatory): Held in mid-February.
  • Second Exam (Optional): Held in May, only for students who pass the first exam.
  • Students may opt to reappear in up to 3 subjects from core areas: Science, Maths, Social Science, and two language papers.
  • Best of the two scores will be considered for the final mark sheet.

Important Conditions

  • Students must appear in at least 3 subjects in the first exam to be eligible for the second.
  • Students who fail in three or more subjects are placed in ‘Essential Repeat’ category and cannot appear in the second exam.
  • Students failing in 1-2 subjects will fall into the ‘Compartment’ category and can take the second exam as a re-attempt.

Changes to Compartment Exam Schedule

  • From 2026-27, Compartment Exam 1 will be merged with the second exam (improvement) and held in June instead of July.
  • Second and third attempts will align with the next year’s main and improvement exams respectively.

Special Provisions

  • Sports quota students with exam clashes will be allowed to appear in the second exam.
  • Students from snow-bound regions (e.g., Ladakh) may choose between the two sessions.
  • Subject replacement students can reappear in failed academic subjects for eligibility in higher education.

Class 11 Admission & DigiLocker

  • First exam results will be available on DigiLocker for immediate admission use.
  • Provisional admission to Class 11 will be allowed for compartment students, confirmed after the second exam result.

Background

  • Since 2019, CBSE allowed improvement in any two subjects, including vocational ones.
  • The new move prioritizes academic subjects, offering improvement in three subjects, covering 60% of the academic load.
