India hosted the BRICS Heads of Anti-Drug Agencies Meeting in Guwahati, Assam, on 6–7 July 2026, bringing together senior officials from the expanded 11-member BRICS grouping to strengthen international cooperation against drug trafficking. Organized by the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) under the Union Ministry of Home Affairs, the meeting focused on emerging threats, including synthetic drugs, darknet-enabled trafficking, new psychoactive substances (NPS), and cryptocurrency-based illicit financial networks. India presented its Vision Document on Narcotics Control 2026–2029, emphasizing technology-driven investigations, stronger border surveillance, intelligence sharing, inter-agency coordination, and international collaboration. Guwahati was chosen due to its strategic location near international borders. The meeting is expected to conclude with a Joint Declaration promoting intelligence exchange, joint investigations, cyber cooperation, capacity building, and stronger action against transnational narcotics networks.
The Government of India announced that over 104 crore health records have been successfully linked to more than 93 crore Ayushman Bharat Health Account (ABHA) accounts, marking a major milestone under the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM). ABHA is a 14-digit unique digital health identifier, similar to Aadhaar, that securely connects individuals with healthcare providers, hospitals, doctors, laboratories, pharmacies, and insurers. It enables seamless access to digital health services while preserving patients’ complete medical history for improved continuity of care. The initiative aims to build a connected digital public health ecosystem by integrating health records across the country. The government plans to further expand the ABDM network to include all patients and healthcare facilities, ensuring secure, paperless, and accessible digital health records for every citizen while improving efficiency and healthcare delivery nationwide.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the CG Semi Outsourced Semiconductor Assembly and Test (OSAT) facility in Sanand, Gujarat, marking a major milestone in India’s semiconductor manufacturing journey under the Semicon India Programme. The facility strengthens India’s capabilities in chip packaging, assembly, and testing, completing a crucial part of the semiconductor value chain from design to production. OSAT units handle the final stages of semiconductor manufacturing, including packaging, quality assurance, and reliability testing for use in electronics, automobiles, and industrial systems. Developed through international collaboration with partners from India, Japan, and Thailand, the facility is expected to initially produce 20 crore units annually, with plans to scale up to 500 crore units. The project supports India’s goal of becoming self-reliant in high-tech manufacturing and positioning itself as a global semiconductor hub.
India registered 125 new Geographical Indication (GI) tags during 2025–26, increasing the total number of registered GI products to 822. Madhya Pradesh led the country with 26 new GI registrations, followed by West Bengal (24), Himachal Pradesh (13), and Jharkhand (11). The registrations cover traditional handicrafts, agricultural products, tribal heritage, and indigenous knowledge, helping protect regional identities while boosting market value and exports. Madhya Pradesh secured GI status for products such as Khajuraho Stone Craft, Betul Bharewa Metal Craft, and traditional tribal crops. West Bengal added products including Jalbhara Sandesh, Banglar Nolen Gur, and Krishnanagar Clay Dolls, while Jharkhand gained recognition for Tussar Silk Sarees, Dokra Craft, and Jadupatia Paintings. Handicrafts account for 53% and agricultural products 31% of India’s registered GI products.
India ranked 125th among 197 countries in the Global Passport Index (GPI) 2026 published by Global Citizen Solutions, slipping one place from last year despite achieving its highest-ever score of 45.1. The index evaluates passports based on enhanced mobility (50%), quality of living (25%), and investment opportunities (25%). India ranked 136th in mobility, 118th in quality of living, and 94th in investment potential, reflecting improvements in living standards and investment climate but limited visa-free travel. Indian passport holders currently enjoy visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to around 26 destinations, while visas remain necessary for major countries such as the United States, United Kingdom, Germany, France, China, and the UAE. Sweden topped the 2026 rankings, followed by Switzerland and Finland.
The Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) facilitated the first export shipment of premium Areko cherries and Scentrose plums from Jammu and Kashmir to the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The consignment, consisting of one metric tonne of fresh stone fruits, was sourced from farmers in Shopian and Pulwama districts and sent to Abu Dhabi and Dubai. According to the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, the initiative aims to expand India’s fresh fruit exports and improve farmers’ income through better global price realization. Growers reportedly earned nearly 60% higher returns for cherries and 120% higher returns for plums compared to domestic markets. APEDA Chairman Abhishek Dev said J&K has strong potential as a hub for premium horticultural exports. The move is expected to open new international markets, boost farmer earnings, and strengthen India’s global agricultural presence.
The Delhi Government has launched Mission Kayakalp, a comprehensive initiative to modernise infrastructure in government schools and create safer, cleaner, and more inspiring learning environments. Announced by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, the mission focuses on repairing school buildings, upgrading laboratories, improving sanitation, installing RO drinking water systems, enhancing campus amenities, and ensuring accessibility for children with disabilities. It also promotes green campuses and environmental sustainability while encouraging community participation through district administrations, the Education Department, CSR initiatives, social organisations, market associations, and local communities. Mission Kayakalp aims to improve education quality by providing hygienic, inclusive, and well-equipped schools that support students’ academic and overall development. By strengthening basic infrastructure and public participation, the initiative seeks to transform Delhi’s government schools into modern institutions offering high-quality learning environments for every student.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has begun a six-day visit to Indonesia, Australia, and New Zealand from 6–11 July 2026 to strengthen India’s strategic and economic partnerships in the Indo-Pacific region. In Indonesia, he will meet President Prabowo Subianto, review the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, interact with the Indian diaspora, and visit the Prambanan Temple in Yogyakarta. In Australia, PM Modi will hold talks with Prime Minister Anthony Albanese on defence, security, trade, investment, education, mobility, critical technologies, sports, and people-to-people ties. His final stop in New Zealand includes discussions with Prime Minister Christopher Luxon on trade, commerce, and economic cooperation. The three-nation tour reinforces India’s Act East Policy, MAHASAGAR Vision, and commitment to a free, open, and inclusive Indo-Pacific while deepening regional cooperation.
India is chairing the Ninth Session of the UNCTAD Intergovernmental Group of Experts (IGE) on Consumer Protection Law and Policy in Geneva, Switzerland, from 6–8 July 2026. Led by Nidhi Khare, Secretary of the Department of Consumer Affairs, the meeting brings together policymakers, regulators, and international organizations to strengthen global consumer protection and cooperation. A key highlight is the launch of the UN Principles for Consumer Product Safety, adopted by the UN General Assembly in December 2025, providing a global framework for product safety and consumer rights. The agenda also includes a peer review of Argentina’s consumer protection laws and discussions on emerging market challenges. India will showcase initiatives such as the National Consumer Helpline and the AI-powered e-Jagriti platform, highlighting its growing leadership in digital consumer grievance redressal and international consumer policy.
The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) received the Gold Award at the National Awards for e-Governance 2026 for its AI-powered mental health platform ICMR-MINDS under the category “Innovation through the Use of AI and Other New Age Technologies to Deliver Citizen-Centric Services.” The award was presented by Dr. Jitendra Singh during the 29th National Conference on e-Governance held in Jaipur on 1–2 July 2026. ICMR-MINDS uses an AI-based Clinical Decision Support System (CDSS) to help frontline healthcare workers provide standardized mental health screening, assessment, treatment recommendations, and follow-up care. The platform features multilingual support, offline functionality, gamified tools, and real-time dashboards. Developed with leading institutions, including several AIIMS campuses and PGIMER Chandigarh, it aims to expand accessible, evidence-based mental healthcare across India.
The UP Vishwakarma Shram Samman Yojana 2026, launched by the Government of Uttar Pradesh, is a flagship welfare scheme aimed at empowering traditional artisans and craftsmen. Introduced in 2018, it provides free six-day residential skill training, a ₹10,000 toolkit grant, and access to concessional loans up to ₹10 lakh through the UP Khadi and Village Industries Board (UPKVIB). The scheme supports trades such as carpentry, pottery, tailoring, blacksmithing, and weaving, helping artisans upgrade skills, adopt modern tools, and improve income opportunities. It focuses on self-employment, entrepreneurship, and preserving India’s traditional occupations while enhancing productivity and market competitiveness. No formal education is required, and priority is given to OBC, SC, ST, EWS, and minority groups. The initiative complements the PM Vishwakarma Scheme, strengthening grassroots economic development and promoting sustainable livelihoods in Uttar Pradesh.
Japan’s Hayabusa2 spacecraft, operated by the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA), successfully completed a high-speed flyby of asteroid Torifune (2001 CC21) on 5 July 2026. The spacecraft passed about 800 metres from the asteroid’s centre while travelling at a relative speed of 5 kilometres per second, allowing scientists to observe its surface, structure, and temperature. Torifune is estimated to measure 450–500 metres in diameter. JAXA confirmed that Hayabusa2 remained fully operational after the encounter. The spacecraft previously achieved global recognition by returning samples from asteroid Ryugu to Earth in 2020. This flyby is part of Hayabusa2’s extended mission, supporting planetary defence research by testing advanced navigation, rapid reconnaissance, and precision guidance technologies. The mission will continue with a planned rendezvous with asteroid 1998 KY26 in 2031.

Zoonoses are caused by bacteria, viruses, parasites, and fungi, with diseases like rabies, COVID-19, Ebola, anthrax, and avian influenza among the most significant. According to the WHO, nearly 60% of human infectious diseases originate from animals. Key prevention measures include vaccination, hygiene, safe food handling, surveillance, and public awareness to reduce outbreak risks and strengthen global health security.
India commemorated the 125th birth anniversary of Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee on 6 July 2026, honouring one of the nation’s most influential political leaders, educationists, and nationalists. Born in 1901 in Kolkata, he played a key role in shaping modern India’s political and educational landscape. He became the youngest Vice-Chancellor of the University of Calcutta in 1934, introducing major academic reforms and promoting research and Indian languages. After Independence, he served in the first Union Cabinet (1947) as Minister for Industry and Supply. In 1951, he founded the Bharatiya Jana Sangh, which later evolved into the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Mookerjee was a strong advocate of national integration, famously opposing special status for Jammu & Kashmir and promoting the principle of “One nation, one constitution.” His legacy continues to inspire India’s democratic and nation-building ideals.
