Death of renowned archaeologist Padma Shri Enamul Haque

Prof. Dr. Enamul Haque, a well-known archaeologist, historian, expert in art, and former director general of the Bangladesh National Museum, is no longer alive. At the time of his passing, he was 85. At his Dhaka home, he passed away. He served as the National Museum’s director general from September 28, 1983, to February 6, 1991. He received the Ekushey Padak in 2016, the Swadhinata Padak in 2020, and the Indian Padma Shri award in honour of his contributions.

About Padmashree Enamul Haque:

  • Enamul Haque was a Bangladeshi museologist who lived from 1 March 1937 to 10 July 2022.The Government of Bangladesh presented him with the Ekushey Padak in 2014 and the Independence Day Award in 2017.
  • In 2020, the Indian government also gave Haque the Padma Shri award, the fourth-highest civilian honour in the country, in recognition of his outstanding work in the fields of archaeology and museology.
  • Enamul Haque graduated from Dhaka University with a history bachelor’s degree and a history and archaeology master’s degree. Later, he finished his PhD in South Asian art at Oxford University.
  • In 1972, Dr. Enamul Haque started working at the Dhaka Museum. On November 10, 1973, Dr. Enamul Haque took over as director of the museum.
  • He served as the National Museum’s director general from September 28, 1983, to February 6, 1991.

Additionally, he was chosen to lead the International Council of Museums Asia-Pacific Organization from 1983 to 1986. He was the president, chairman, and academic director of the International Centre for Study of Bengal Art as well as a professor of national culture and heritage at the Independent University of Bangladesh.
