Early Life and Educational Life of Hiralal Chaudhary

Hiralal Chaudhary excelled in his studies from an early age. He completed his primary education at Laban Bengali Primary School in Shillong and later graduated from Gomes School in Sylhet with honors in four subjects.

His academic excellence earned him a scholarship to Bangabasi College in Calcutta, where he attained his B.Sc. with Honors in 1941. His thirst for knowledge led him to pursue a Master’s degree in Zoology from Baliganji Science College, University of Calcutta in 1943. He furthered his education with special training in the United States under the guidance of H.S. Swingle at Auburn University, where he obtained his MS degree in Fisheries Management in 1955.

Dr. Chaudhary’s Research on Induced Breeding

Returning to India with international knowledge and expertise, Dr. Chaudhari joined the Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute near Barrackpore in 1948. Observing oval-shaped transparent eggs being expelled from the fish in the tidal waters of the Ganges, he became intrigued by the reproductive process. This curiosity led him to develop induced breeding techniques, a breakthrough in the field of pisciculture.

On July 10, 1956, after nine years of dedicated research, Dr. Chaudhary achieved a momental feat by successfully inducing the breeding of carp species. This pioneering work led the foundation of what would be known as the Blue Revolution in India.
