The full form of FBI is Federal Bureau of Investigation. It is the main investigation and security agency of the United States. The FBI works to stop serious crimes like terrorism, cybercrime and corruption. It helps protect the country and its people by finding and catching criminals across the U.S. and in other countries.
In 1896, the National Bureau of Criminal Identification was created. It helped police all over the U.S. identity known criminals. On July 26, 1908, the Bureau of Investigation (BOI) was started. This was the beginning of the FBI.
The Attorney General at that time, Charles Bonaparte, used government money to hire 34 people, including some from the Secret Service. These people became the first agents of this new investigation team. The first leader of the BOI was Stanley Finch, and he was called a ”chief,” not ”director.”
After 25 years, in 1933, the BOI joined with the Bureau of Prohibition and was renamed the Division of Investigation (DOI). Just two years later, in 1935, it got a new name again – Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). Since then, it has kept this name.
The FBI was officially given the power to investigate crime under Title 28, Section 533 of the U.S. Code. This law allows the Attorney General to appoint people to find and catch criminals. Other federal laws also allow the FBI to investigate certain types of crimes.
The main office of the FBI is in Washington, D.C., inside the J. Edgar Hoover Building. In the U.S., the FBI has 56 field offices in big cities and over 400 smaller offices called resident agencies.
