Sikkim is a beautiful state in northeast India, known for its mountains and natural beauty. Unlike other states, Sikkim did not have a railway station for many years because of its hilly landscape. People had to rely on roads to travel to and from the state. To improve transportation and connectivity, the first railway station was finally built, making travel easier for residents and tourists.
Rangpo Railway Station is an under-construction railway station in Sikkim, located at Khanikhola, Majitar, in Pakyong District. It is part of the Sevoke-Rangpo Railway Line and will be the first railway station in Sikkim. The station’s code is RNGPO. It will serve Rangpo city and three districts of Sikkim: Pakyong, Gangtok and Mangam. It is 38 km from Gangtok and 21 km from Pakyong Airport. The station will have three platforms and four railway lines.
The Sevoke-Rangpo railway line is 44 km long and will connect Sikkim with West Bengal. The foundation stone for the project was laid in October 2009 by the Vice President of India. Initially, the railway line was planned to be 53 km long, but the final alignment is 45 km. Of this, 3.5 km falls in Sikkim and the rest in West Bengal.
