Sikkim is a beautiful state in northeast India, known for its mountains and natural beauty. Unlike other states, Sikkim did not have a railway station for many years because of its hilly landscape. People had to rely on roads to travel to and from the state. To improve transportation and connectivity, the first railway station was finally built, making travel easier for residents and tourists.
Rangpo Railway Station, currently under construction, is located at Khanikhola in Majitar, Pakyong District of Sikkim. It is part of the Sevoke–Rangpo Railway Line and will become Sikkim’s first railway station. The station code is RNGPO. Once completed, it will connect Rangpo city and serve the districts of Pakyong, Gangtok, and Mangan. The station lies about 38 km from Gangtok and 21 km from Pakyong Airport, featuring three platforms and four railway tracks.
The Sevoke-Rangpo railway line is 44 km long and will connect Sikkim with West Bengal. The foundation stone for the project was laid in October 2009 by the Vice President of India. Initially, the railway line was planned to be 53 km long, but the final alignment is 45 km. Of this, 3.5 km falls in Sikkim and the rest in West Bengal.
