Guwahati railway station gets FSSAI ‘Eat Right Station’ tag

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has awarded the Eat Right Station certification to Guwahati Railway Station for its provision of high-quality and nutritious food to passengers. This makes it the first station under the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) to receive this status, valid for two years starting from June 2. The Eat Right India scheme, initiated by FSSAI, aims to transform the country’s food system towards safe, healthy, and sustainable food for all passengers.

Eat Right India: A Flagship Program by FSSAI

As part of the program, stations undergo an audit by an FSSAI-empanelled third-party agency, which assigns them a rating from 1 to 5. A 5-star rating indicates that the station fully complies with the necessary standards to ensure the availability of safe and hygienic food for passengers.

Eat Right India employs a combination of regulatory measures, capacity-building initiatives, collaboration, and empowerment approaches to ensure that the food served is suitable for both people and the environment. Currently, 66 stations across the country have been certified, while two stations are in the process of obtaining certification. Mumbai Central Railway Station became the first Eat Right Station, achieving a rating of four stars.

How to Become an Eat Right Station?

According to the official website, there are five steps involved in becoming an Eat Right Station. The railway station must first register itself, followed by a pre-audit conducted based on specific criteria. Step three entails training provided by FSSAI-empanelled Training Partners. This is followed by a final audit carried out by third-party auditors or Hygiene Rating Auditors. Step five involves the awarding of a two-year certification.

Madhya Pradesh Has the Most Eat Right Stations

The state with the highest number of certified railway stations under the program is Madhya Pradesh, with 18 stations. Rajasthan and Delhi follow closely with seven Eat Right Stations each. Notable stations in Delhi include Shahdara Railway Station, New Delhi Railway Station, Old Delhi Railway Station, Narela Railway Station, Anand Vihar Terminal, Hazrat Nizamuddin, and Okhla Railway Station. As of now, no railway station from Haryana has received certification under this program.
