ICC Rule Changes in Cricket: Stumping Replays Limited; Concussion Substitute and BCCI’s Decision

In a significant alteration to cricket playing conditions, the International Cricket Council (ICC) has restricted the Decision Review System (DRS) for stumping incidents. Effective from December 12, 2023, teams can now only challenge caught-behind decisions with a separate DRS option, preventing misuse observed in the 2020 series against India.

Umpires Rely Solely on Side-On Camera Images

The amended rule mandates umpires to rely solely on side-on camera images for stumping reviews, eliminating the examination of potential snicks. This ensures a focused review for stumped incidents without allowing teams a free review for other modes of dismissal.

Enhancements to Concussion Substitute Rule

No Bowling for Replacing Players with Pre-existing Bowling Suspension

The ICC has clarified the concussion replacement rule, disallowing substitute players from bowling if the replaced player was already suspended from bowling during the concussion incident. This ensures fairness in player replacements.

Time Limit for On-Field Injury Assessment

A time limit of four minutes for on-field injury assessment and treatment has been introduced, balancing prompt medical attention with minimal game disruptions.

BCCI Maintains ‘Dead Ball’ and Two Bouncers per Over Rules

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has decided to uphold the ‘Dead Ball’ and two bouncers per over rules, initially introduced in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy and Vijay Hazare Trophy, now applied in the upcoming Ranji Trophy starting January 12, 2024.
