India has taken another important step in strengthening its ties with neighboring countries. The Indian Navy ship INS Sunayna recently reached Malé, the capital of the Maldives, as part of a special mission called IOS SAGAR. This visit shows India’s strong commitment to friendship, cooperation and security in the Indian Ocean region.
INS Sunayna arrived in Malé on 6 April 2026 and received a warm welcome from the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF). This friendly reception reflects the close relationship between India and the Maldives, especially in the fields of maritime security and cooperation.
One special feature of this mission is that the ship has a multinational crew. Personnel from 16 friendly countries are part of this deployment. Even two members from the MNDF are sailing on the ship, showing strong teamwork and trust between nations.
While travelling to Malé, the crew carried out several training activities. These included basic ship handling (seamanship), small arms firing and emergency drills like damage control. These exercises help improve coordination and ensure that all crew members are ready to handle different situations together.
After reaching Malé, India’s High Commissioner to the Maldives, Shri G. Balasubramanian, visited INS Sunayna. He met the crew and appreciated their efforts. Such visits help boost morale and strengthen diplomatic ties.
During its stay in the Maldives, many activities are planned. These include professional meetings, social interactions and sports events. All these activities aim to build better understanding, friendship and cooperation among the participation countries.
When INS Sunayna leaves Malé, it will take part in a Passage Exercise (PASSEX) with the MNDF Coast Guard. This joint exercise will help both navies improve coordination and work better together in real-life situations.
This mission is part of the IOS SAGAR initiative, which focuses on improving maritime cooperation in the Indian Ocean region. It supports India’s “Neighbourhood First” policy and the vision of MAHASAGAR, which stands for mutual growth, security and development for all countries in the region.
INS Sunayna began its journey from Mumbai on 2 April 2026. The mission was officially flagged off by Raksha Rajya Mantri Shri Sanjay Seth. This shows the importance India gives to such international efforts.
