The International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) believes that substantial progress has been made in enhancing the culture and leadership of the sport. KEY POINTS:

  • Many of the member federations, who have long called for renewal and change inside the organisation, will, according to the IWF, be satisfied by a change in leadership.
  • The 12 new members of the Executive Board constitute a 66 percent change in staffing overall, despite the IWF’s emphasis on the necessity of maintaining “seasoned leadership” during this transitional phase.
  • The minimum quota for women was “significantly exceeded,” and three Athlete Representatives were appointed with full voting privileges.
  • Quinones was inadvertently named general secretary as a result of a voting mistake in Tirana.
  • Quinones, who has indicated interest in the IWF holding a recount, may have been chosen inadvertently as the winner due to a rounding error in the vote-counting process.

About IWF:

The 192 Member Federations of the IWF date back to its founding in 1905. Iraqi Mohammed Hasan Jalood serves as the IWF’s president.
