President Ram Nath Kovind has appointed senior Kashmiri lawyer Javed Iqbal Wani as a Judge of the Jammu and Kashmir High Court. He also served as additional advocate general of Jammu and Kashmir High Court for nearly 11 months in 2019. Wani’s appointment was recommended on January 22 by the Supreme Court Collegium headed by Chief Justice of India S A Bobde.

With his appointment, the strength of the HC will increase to 13 against the total strength of 17. This is for the first time after 2013 that a Kashmiri has been elevated as a judge of the High Court from Bar quota. The last such appointment was made in 2013 when Justice Ali Muhammad Magrey was appointed as judge of the High Court.
