In a thrilling final at the BWF Australian Open 2024 in Sydney on Sunday (16 June), Lee Zii Jia from Malaysia emerged victorious against Naraoka Kodai of Japan, securing his second title of the season.
The third seed, Lee Zii Jia, needed an hour and 18 minutes to defeat Naraoka Kodai in a hard-fought encounter. The final score read 21-19, 11-21, 21-18, after Lee had won the Thailand Open last month.
The match was characterized by long, grueling rallies, with both players displaying exceptional defensive skills. Lee initially trailed 3-2 in the head-to-head against Naraoka, but he had emerged victorious in their previous meeting at the All England Open in March.
While Naraoka is renowned for his defensive prowess, he showcased an aggressive approach in the second game, taking the attack to Lee. This strategy paid off as he won the game convincingly, 21-11, after trailing 11-6 at the mid-game interval.
In the deciding third game, Naraoka raced to a 5-0 lead, but Lee regained his focus and fought back to take an 8-7 lead. The game remained closely contested, with Naraoka leading 11-10 at the changeover.
Lee then produced a spectacular passage of play, controlling the tempo and winning six consecutive points to take a commanding lead. Despite Naraoka’s efforts to stage a comeback, Lee maintained his composure and secured multiple titles in a calendar year for the first time in his career.
The final moments were intense, with Naraoka missing two crucial overheads, allowing Lee to secure the victory and claim the BWF Australian Open 2024 title.
Lee Zii Jia’s triumph at the BWF Australian Open 2024 marks a significant milestone in his career, as he has now won multiple titles in a single calendar year for the first time. This achievement showcases his consistent performance and ability to excel on the international stage.
As the badminton world celebrates Lee’s success, his victory serves as an inspiration for aspiring players and highlights Malaysia’s prowess in the sport.
