Meghalaya Gets Its First Woman Chief Justice
In a landmark moment for the judiciary in Northeast India, Meghalaya has appointed its first woman Chief Justice. Justice Revati Mohite Dere took oath in Shillong, creating history in the matrilineal state. Her appointment is seen as a step towards greater gender representation in higher judiciary and strengthening judicial leadership in the region.
Revati Mohite Dere was sworn in as the first woman Chief Justice of the Meghalaya High Court. She succeeded Soumen Sen, who was transferred to the Kerala High Court.
The swearing in ceremony was held at the Durbar Hall of Lok Bhavan, Shillong. The oath of office was administered by Chandrashekhar H Vijayashankar. Senior officials, members of the judiciary, and representatives of the legal fraternity attended the ceremony, underlining the importance of the occasion for the state’s constitutional setup.
Before her elevation, Justice Revati Mohite Dere served as a judge of the Bombay High Court. She is known for her strong judicial record and experience in constitutional and criminal matters. Her appointment was recommended by the Supreme Court Collegium on December 18, 2025, reflecting institutional confidence in her leadership and judicial acumen.
Meghalaya is a matrilineal society, but representation of women in top constitutional posts has remained limited. Justice Dere’s appointment as Chief Justice carries symbolic and institutional importance. It strengthens gender inclusivity in the higher judiciary and sets a precedent for greater representation of women in leadership roles within India’s judicial system.
The Chief Justice of a High Court is responsible for judicial administration, roster allocation, and efficient functioning of the court. Appointments are made by the President of India following recommendations of the Supreme Court Collegium. The role is critical in ensuring judicial independence and timely delivery of justice at the state level.
