KEY POINTS:

  • A Naval Post had been established there for security and defence reasons. However, without many restrictions, it was impossible to grow the island into a popular tourist destination. As a result, it is given to the Administration.
  • The Lt. General continued by stating that over the past few years, NITI Ayog and Island Development Agency have taken a number of measures to develop these Islands in accordance with Act East Policy.
  • The A&N Islands are crucial from a national strategic perspective. Increasing connectivity is therefore essential.
  • In order to improve aviation connectivity with the mainland, expansion is being carried out. This will also promote the expansion of tourism.
  • Since 1967, INS Jarwa has had administrative control over the island. Up until the Japanese took control of the island in 1942, Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Island served as the administrative centre for British rule in the islands.
  • The Chief Commissioner Bungalow and other buildings on the island were devastated during the Second World War. In 1943, Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose visited Andaman and Nicobar and stayed on the island as well.
  • In December 2018, Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Island was given a new name by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. It was formerly referred to as Ross Island. The island welcomes visitors and is a popular tourist destination.
  • Finding deer and peacocks in wide spaces is one of the key draws. More than 500 deer and 120 peacocks can be seen on the island. A statue of a lone sailor and a lighthouse are also located on the island’s backside. It is the first solar lighthouse in India.
