In a moment of sporting glory, Indian para-shuttler Nitesh Kumar achieved a monumental victory by clinching the gold medal in the men’s singles SL3 event at the Paris Paralympic Games 2024. Nitesh, making his debut at the Paralympics, displayed remarkable resilience and skill as he defeated Great Britain’s Daniel Bethell, a silver medallist at the Tokyo Paralympics, in a thrilling three-game match.
The final match, held at La Chapelle Arena Court 1, was nothing short of a marathon, lasting a grueling 80 minutes. Both players, top-seeded Nitesh and second-seeded Bethell, put on an extraordinary display of athleticism and determination. The intensity of the match was evident as both players pushed each other to their limits, making it a true test of endurance and mental strength.
The match began with Nitesh trailing in the first half of the opening game, but he soon found his rhythm, eventually winning the game 21-14 after 33 minutes of play. However, Bethell, determined to make a comeback, staged a strong performance in the second game, taking it 21-18, thereby forcing a decisive third game.
The deciding game was a nerve-wracking affair, with the lead swinging back and forth between the two players. Nitesh had his first gold medal point at 20-19, but Bethell managed to save it, earning himself a gold medal point at 21-20. Yet, Nitesh’s grit and determination shone through as he saved Bethell’s match point and then went on to win the next three points. The final score stood at 23-21 in favor of Nitesh, securing him the gold medal.
This victory marks Nitesh Kumar’s first gold medal at the Paralympic Games and adds to India’s growing tally of medals at the Paris 2024 Paralympics. His triumph also stands as India’s second gold medal at these Games, following Avani Lekhara’s gold in shooting.
Nitesh’s victory is a testament to his hard work, dedication, and the spirit of sportsmanship. His success not only brings pride to India but also serves as an inspiration to aspiring para-athletes across the country.
