Pakistan Becomes President of the UN Security Council in July 2025
On Tuesday, July 1, 2025, Pakistan took on an important new job. It became the President of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for the month of July. This is a very big job because the Security Council is like the brain of the United Nations; it makes important decisions to help keep the world safe and peaceful.
Pakistan said it takes this job with a “sense of purpose, humility, and conviction.” That means the country wants to do a good job, be fair, and work hard for peace and cooperation. The UN Security Council has 15 members, and each one gets a turn to be president for a month. This month, it’s Pakistan’s turn.
This is not the first time Pakistan is part of the Security Council. It was elected again as a non-permanent member starting in January 2025. Non-permanent means that Pakistan is on the Council for two years, but it doesn’t stay forever. In the vote, Pakistan got 182 out of 193 votes, which shows that most countries supported its membership.
Now, as the President for July, Pakistan will lead the Council’s meetings and help decide what issues to focus on.
The Foreign Office of Pakistan said the country will follow the UN Charter, which is a list of rules that all members of the UN agree to follow. They also said Pakistan supports international law and believes in multilateralism, which means working together with others.
Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad will be the one leading the meetings this month. He said Pakistan will be transparent, inclusive, and responsive. This means they will be open, fair, and ready to listen to everyone. He also said the world is facing many big problems right now, like conflicts and humanitarian crises, and that Pakistan is ready to help the Council work together to solve them.
Pakistan has planned three major meetings this month. These are called high-level events, and they will talk about very important topics. On July 22, there will be a meeting about Promoting Peace and Security through Multilateralism and Peaceful Solutions. This means countries will talk about how to solve problems by talking and working together, not by fighting.
On July 23, Pakistan will lead a special meeting about Palestine, a place where people have been asking for peace for many years. Then, on July 24, there will be a meeting about how the United Nations works with other groups like the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC).
These meetings will be led by Ishaq Dar, who is the Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister of Pakistan. He will speak on behalf of Pakistan and help guide the talks.
This is not the first time Pakistan has been part of the UN Security Council. It has been a member many times before—going all the way back to 1952. Over the years, Pakistan has helped in UN peacekeeping missions, sending its soldiers to other countries to protect people and keep peace.
Pakistan’s ambassador said the country has always supported dialogue and diplomacy, which means solving problems by talking instead of fighting. He also said Pakistan is ready to work with all the other countries on the Council to take timely and united action when needed.
Pakistan’s leadership this month is important. It shows the country is trusted by many others and is ready to take on a big responsibility. With a focus on peace, respect, and teamwork, Pakistan hopes to help the world become a better, safer place.
As President of the UN Security Council, Pakistan will use its voice and experience to bring people together and promote peace—not just for one country, but for the whole world.
