Renowned playback singer Uma Ramanan, who predominantly sang in Tamil, passed away at the age of 72 in Chennai. The veteran singer, known for her melodious voice and extensive repertoire, has left an indelible mark on the Indian music industry.

Ramanan is survived by her husband AV Ramanan, also a renowned singer, and their son Vignesh Ramanan.

Illustrious Career

According to reports, Uma Ramanan was a trained classical singer and appeared in more than 6,000 concerts over a span of 35 years. Her breakthrough came with the song “Poongathave Thalthiravai” from the film “Nizhalgal,” which propelled her to fame.

Celebrated Collaborations

Ramanan’s voice graced numerous hit songs composed by the legendary music director Ilaiyaraaja. Some of her acclaimed works with him include “Bhoopalam Isaikkum” from “Thooral Ninnu Pochchu,” “Aanandha Raagam” from “Panner Pushpangal,” “Kanmani Nee Vara” from “Thendrale Ennai Thodu,” “Ponn Maanae” from “Oru Kaidhiyin Dairy,” “Aagaya Vennilave” from “Arangetra Velai,” and “Sri Ranga Ranganathanin” from “Mahanadi,” among others.

Final Melody

Ramanan’s last recorded song was “Kannum Kannumthan Kalandaachu” for the Vijay-starrer “Thirupaachi,” further cementing her legacy in the Tamil film industry.
