PM Modi Announces $1 Million Grant to UNESCO

Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced India’s contribution of one million dollars to the UNESCO World Heritage Centre to support heritage conservation globally, particularly in the Global South. This announcement was made during the inauguration of the 46th session of the World Heritage Committee at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi.

India’s Commitment to Global Heritage Preservation

India is committed to preserving global heritage, offering support not only within the country but also in the Global South. PM Modi highlighted India’s assistance in conserving heritage sites like Angkor Wat in Cambodia, Cham Temples in Vietnam, and Bagan Stupa in Myanmar. The one million dollar grant will be used for capacity building, technical assistance, and conservation of world heritage sites.

Certificate Programme in World Heritage Management

A new certificate programme in world heritage management has been initiated in India to train young professionals in heritage conservation. This programme aims to enhance the skills and knowledge of individuals dedicated to preserving cultural heritage.

Appeal for Global Cooperation

PM Modi called for collective efforts to advance heritage preservation worldwide. He emphasized the importance of unity in promoting human welfare and recognizing the value of heritage in the context of modern development.

India’s Vision: Development and Heritage

Over the past decade, India has made significant strides in modern development while honoring its heritage. Key projects include the Vishwanath Corridor in Kashi, the construction of the Ram Temple in Ayodhya, and the modern campus of Nalanda University. India’s scientific heritage, exemplified by Ayurveda, continues to benefit the world.

Engineering Marvels in India’s Heritage

India’s heritage showcases remarkable engineering achievements. PM Modi cited the Kedarnath Temple, constructed in the 8th century at a challenging altitude of 3500 meters, as an example of ancient engineering excellence. He also mentioned the 2000-year-old iron pillar in Delhi, which remains rust-resistant, demonstrating advanced ancient metallurgy.

Proposal for a New UNESCO World Heritage Site

A historic site in northeast India, the “Maidam,” has been proposed for inclusion in the UNESCO World Heritage List. If accepted, it will be India’s 43rd World Heritage site and the first cultural world heritage site in northeast India. PM Modi highlighted this as a proud achievement for the nation.
