Pravasi Bharatiya Divas, also known as Non-Resident Indian (NRI) Day, holds a significant place in the Indian calendar. Celebrated on January 9, it serves as a tribute to the contributions and achievements of the overseas Indian community to the development of India. The day also marks the return of Mahatma Gandhi from South Africa to India in 1915, symbolizing the leadership that fueled India’s freedom struggle.
The inaugural celebration of Pravasi Bharatiya Divas took place in 2003. Originally an annual event, the format underwent revision in 2015, transforming it into a biennial celebration. This restructuring included the introduction of theme-based conferences during the intervening years, bringing together overseas diaspora experts, policy-makers, and stakeholders.
In 2024, Pravasi Bharatiya Divas is set to be celebrated on January 9. This flagship event is organized by the Ministry of External Affairs and is hosted in different cities, showcasing the diversity and progress of various regions of India.
Having witnessed 17 conventions to date, Pravasi Bharatiya Divas has become a key platform for engaging the overseas Indian community with the Indian government and people. The last celebration in 2023 took place in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, continuing the tradition of highlighting the achievements of the Indian diaspora.
The thematic focus of Pravasi Bharatiya Divas is chosen to align with the current priorities and concerns of the Indian diaspora. In 2021, the theme centred around “Contributing to Atmanirbhar Bharat,” while 2023’s theme was “Diaspora: Reliable Partners for India’s Progress in Amrit Kaal.”
An integral part of the celebration is the Pravasi Bharatiya Samman Awards. Instituted in 2003, these awards recognize the outstanding achievements and contributions of NRIs and PIOs in various fields, including education, science and technology, arts and culture, social work, public service, trade and industry, and philanthropy.
These conventions provide a valuable platform for the overseas Indian community to engage with the Indian government and connect with the land of their ancestors. Beyond celebration, these events foster mutually beneficial activities, facilitating networking among the global Indian community and enabling the sharing of experiences in diverse fields.
In essence, Pravasi Bharatiya Divas stands as a testament to the enduring bond between the Indian diaspora and their homeland, creating a bridge for collaboration and growth on a global scale.
