South Korea, US Reaffirm Goal of Korean Peninsula Denuclearisation

Amid rising global tensions and regional security concerns, South Korea and the United States have reaffirmed their commitment to the denuclearisation of the Korean Peninsula. The statement came from South Korea’s National Security Adviser Wi Sung-lac, who emphasized that the denuclearisation objective remains firm—regardless of North Korea’s stance.

The issue holds strong relevance in international relations, strategic studies, and diplomacy—important themes in UPSC, SSC, defence services, and other competitive exams.

Details of the Denuclearisation Plan

Speaking in Seoul, Wi Sung-lac outlined a three-stage approach aimed at rolling back North Korea’s nuclear and missile capabilities, while ensuring regional security and diplomatic engagement.

Three-Stage Plan

  1. Initial Halt: The immediate priority is to halt North Korea’s ongoing nuclear and missile development programs.
  2. Trust-Building Measures: South Korea is focusing on reducing tensions through dialogue, without weakening national security or deterrence.
  3. Final Denuclearisation: The long-term goal remains the complete dismantling of North Korea’s nuclear arsenal, under international verification.

Wi clarified that South Korea’s strategy involves a balance between peaceful negotiation and military readiness, ensuring that deterrence remains intact while pushing for disarmament.

APEC Summit and Diplomatic Context

The upcoming Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit, scheduled to be held in Gyeongju, South Korea, is seen as an important multilateral platform for discussing security, trade, and regional cooperation.

  • North Korea’s Absence: Wi confirmed there is no possibility of North Korean leader Kim Jong-un attending the summit.
  • US Participation: Former US President Donald Trump is expected to visit South Korea during the event, reinforcing bilateral ties and supporting diplomatic efforts on denuclearisation.
