The Line of Control separates J&K from areas controlled by Pakistan. It shares borders with Himachal Pradesh, Punjab and Ladakh. The Kalij Pheasant is the state bird of Jammu and Kashmir. It was declared the state bird on 21st October 2021. In Kashmir, it is called Wan Kokur, meaning ”wild cock.” The male has shiny blue-black feathers and a red face. This bird lives in forests and shows the natural beauty of the region.
The Kalij Pheasant lives mostly in the Himalayas foothills, from Nepal and Pakistan to western Thailand. In India, it is commonly found in the forests of Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand.
The male Kalij Pheasant looks very attractive with shiny blue-black feathers. Some males also have white on their back or chest. Their legs are grey, and their face is red and bare. The females are brown in color, and their feathers look a bit like scales due to light-colored edges. Both males and females have grey legs, which helps to tell them apart from similar birds like the silver pheasant.
