‘SWAYATT’ promoting start-ups on GeM

The government e-Marketplace (GeM) held a celebration to celebrate “SWAYATT,” a programme to support start-ups, women, and youth advantage through e-Transactions on GeM, which has been a major success. SWAYATT is a programme that seeks to increase the benefits of e-Transactions on government e-Marketplaces (GeM) for startups, women, and young people.

  • It is important to note that by registering more than 8.5 lakh Micro and Small Businesses (MSEs) on the GeM portal and helping MSEs secure over Rs. 1.87 lakh crore in sales spread across 68 lakh+ orders, the GeM promotes social and financial inclusion.
  • The event’s chief guest was Radha S. Chauhan, Secretary, Ministry of Personnel and Training.
  • Speaking to the group, P.K. Singh, CEO of GeM, described the advancements made so far in promoting social and financial inclusion through the registration of more than 8.5 lakh Micro and Small Enterprises (MSEs) on the GeM portal, which have been successful in receiving over Rs. 1.87 lakh crore in business spread across 68 lakh+ orders.
  • Singh added that about 43K SC/ST MSEs have delivered 1.35 lakh+ orders worth 2,592 crore on the GeM platform so far, while over 1.45 lakh women MSEs have fulfilled 7.32 lakh orders totaling 15, 922 crore.
  • the GeM’s initiatives to increase the participation of underserved seller groups, including MSEs, women, divyangjan and tribal entrepreneurs, startups, self-help groups, artisan and weavers, etc., and provide them with direct access to government contracts.
  • She added that it has been nothing short of a miracle for the GeM order book to have grown from Rs. 422 lakh crore in 2016–17 to the current Rs. 1.70 lakh crore, up to February 2023, and that it would not have been possible without the tireless efforts of the whole GeM team.

About SWAYATT

In February 2019, the campaign to promote “Startups, Women and Youth Advantage Through eTransactions” (SWAYATT) on GeM was first introduced. By taking proactive measures to facilitate their training and registrations of such specific category of manufacturers and sellers, SWAYATT 2019 sought to promote inclusivity of various categories of sellers and service providers on the portal, foster women’s entrepreneurship, and encourage participation of MSME sector and start-ups in public procurement.

About GeM

For the purpose of acquiring products and services for Central Ministries, State Departments, PSEs, and Autonomous Bodies, GeM was established as a section 8 corporation and placed under the administrative responsibility of the Department of Commerce, Ministry of Commerce and Industry. In GeM, social inclusion is prioritised with an emphasis on boosting participation from underserved sellers who encounter difficulties in public procurement.
