Three Indian Ports Named Green Hydrogen Hubs

India has taken a significant step toward building a future-ready green energy ecosystem by designating three major ports as Green Hydrogen Hubs. The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), under the framework of the National Green Hydrogen Mission, has formally recognised Deendayal Port (Gujarat), V.O. Chidambaranar Port (Tamil Nadu), and Paradip Port (Odisha) as focal points for green hydrogen production, distribution, and usage.

This announcement marks a pivotal moment in India’s clean energy transition and aligns with the country’s broader ambition to achieve net-zero emissions by 2070.

  • V.O. Chidambaranar Port Authority (Tamil Nadu)
  • Paradip Port Authority (Odisha)

Green Hydrogen Hubs: Vision and Strategy

Under the National Green Hydrogen Mission, India aims to become a global hub for green hydrogen production and export. These hydrogen hubs are intended to serve as integrated zones, where clean hydrogen is produced, stored, transported, and consumed across various sectors such as shipping, logistics, fertilizers, and refining.

The selection of these ports is strategic. Ports are ideal for hydrogen hubs because they are,

  • Nodes of high energy demand
  • Gateways for international trade
  • Hubs for heavy industries and maritime activities
  • Well-positioned for export-oriented hydrogen infrastructure

The plan is to develop these hubs in phases, enabling infrastructure development, technology deployment, and commercial scale operations.

Government’s Commitment

  • The government is committed to building an ecosystem of sustainable development to achieve India’s net zero target by 2070.
  • The MNRE has also released guidelines to support the development of hydrogen hubs.
  • These include financial assistance for core infrastructure, cluster-based planning, and public-private collaboration.
