History and Origin

The UN General Assembly officially designated June 23 as Public Service Day on December 20, 2002. To further promote the day, the UN established the Public Service Awards program in 2003.

In 2016, the program was updated to align with the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, ensuring its continued relevance in today’s world.

Public Institutions and Sustainable Development

Effective, accountable, and inclusive institutions are crucial for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This is highlighted in SDG 16 and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

Governments play a primary role in:

  • Implementing the SDGs
  • Reviewing progress at national, regional, and global levels

Importance of Public Administration

Public administration is the cornerstone of government work and is essential for improving people’s lives. To create a better future for all, it’s necessary to:

  • Modernize public administration
  • Transform it to meet today’s challenges

Without capable public administration, governments struggle to function effectively, hindering sustainable development efforts.
