Each year, the UN receives submissions from around the world, showcasing innovative public service projects.

History and Origin

The UN General Assembly officially designated June 23 as Public Service Day on December 20, 2002. To further promote the day, the UN established the Public Service Awards program in 2003.

In 2016, the program was updated to align with the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, ensuring its continued relevance in today’s world.

The United Nations Public Service Forum

This annual global event focuses on improving public governance. It includes:

  • Capacity-development workshops
  • The UN Public Service Awards ceremony
  • A Ministerial Roundtable discussion

The UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA) organizes this forum each year with a host country.
